Unless you are planning on sending traffic out the token-ring, try using the
"virtual-tokenring" interface. It will configure and act exactly like a real
T/R interface, but obviously not have to be terminated on a MAU. Works like a
loopback, but with T/R characteristics. No annoying delay when inserting into
the ring!
You won't get much from the LS1010, except practice creating PVC's and entering
LANE commands. You really need a LANE card for the C5k or an ATM interface for
the 3600. Then you can play with LANE, CLIP and 1483.
If you get T/R interfaces, get a MAU or a Cat3900/Cat1600. Otherwise, the
interfaces won't come up.
If they're cheap, pick up a 2509 or 2511 for a terminal server. Or use the
3600 with async ports. If you can find a multi-port serial router, you can use
it for a Frame Relay Switch.
