Concur on the Beau Williamson book (it's pretty good).
I might disagree with your "best done" statement above though.
It seems to me that PIMv2 Bootstrapping might be preferred over
Auto-RP these days. Assuming you're able to run PIMv2...
ip pim rp-candidate ethernet0 (i want to be RP)
ip pim bsr-candidate ethernet0 (want to be the bootstrapper)
Regardless, "real world" it's better to have an automatic RP discovery
mechanism (Auto-RP, PIMv2 Bootstrap) over manual configuration.
