Isnt the autodiscovery an addon feature??
Here's what I understand about CND.
It's made by a 3rd party - Cisco claims not to "make a penny from
it". They merely endorse it as it works well for Cisco network
designs. Go to any freebie reseller seminar and their flogging it
every time.
It focuses mainly on Cisco but does incorporate other vendors
equipment to a limited extent too. From the Cisco side however it
will check your designs, check with the web database and make sure you
have correct memory, IOS, etc, etc (sort of like Visio and the config
maker rolled into one).
It also has auto discovery but only in the Enterprise add on.
$495 (US) for a course in how to use it from which you get a free copy
of the software. From memory I think it was Global Knowledge that was
doing the courses. I dont know how to get on a course - your local
Cisco office should be able to tell though.
$1000 per year for weekly updates. Fairly necessary as this
incorporates (I believe) not only product updates but IOS requirements
etc.
I'm not sure on this one but I think the Enterprpise upgrade, which
gives you the autodiscovery capabilities, is between $1500 and $2000
(dont quote me on this one).
It seems to be really good and a worthy investment if you are going to
use it for purely Cisco networks all the time. Excellent tool for big
Cisco resellers. If your not one of them and more of a
generalist.....well Visio offers equally as much and even more (i.e.
the ability to pull in NDS/AD databases etc in the Enterprise
version).

Is it a commercial product from cisco or a distributable product to
partners?

You're right, they're pretty old.
I use Cisco Network Designer - the new version has an export for
Visio. CND's not as flexible as Visio for drawing diagrams etc but is
better resolution and has a built in pricing tool and autodiscovery
etc etc...
