here is one alternative:
the olicom 8600 is the same as the catalyst 3900. I use this in my home
lab. In fact, I purchased the olicom switch and run the Cisco code on it.
Works flawlessly.

Subject: Home lab alternatives
Hello all,
After a little browsing on Ebay I had a "great" idea (prolly not
original)...
why not use other vendor products for items that are needed for a home lab
but
not required to know for the lab exam. I'm talking about a frame switch, atm
switch, and a terminal server. Okay, so you have to config your own terminal
server, but if I could find an alternative that saves me $500USD then I
could
prolly manage to remember the host statements :-) Same for the frame
switch.. A
nice used ASN from Bay may save big $$$ compared to a 4K with mods, or even
a
2522/23. I also saw some weird ATM products REAL cheap... unfortunately I
know
squat about other vendor's ATM products (FVC, Fore)...
Has anyone else "made due" with these or other non-cisco products?
recommendations?
Thanks is advance!
