The situation on page 224 of the Slattery/Burton book is different from
Devon's issue in that both Router New York (area 1) and Router Moscow (area
2) which run virtual links to Router Paris (area1&area2) have interfaces on
area 0. It is really just a demonstration of creating a redundant link in
the event of a breakup of area 0.
Devon's case, (as I understood it) has Router 2 connected to Area 1 and Area
0.
However Router 1 connected to only area 1 and Area 2 (which appears to have
no connection to Area 0).
This is the same situation as on page 228 of the Slattery/Burton book, i.e.
connecting area 2 to area 0 through area 1.
The virtual interfaces are probably not showing up because of adding loopback
interfaces after bringing up ospf. Usually rebooting all the routers in the
ospf domain does the trick.
