All routers in the area must have authentication enabled. I don't believe
that it needs to be the same key, though. Everyone on the same segment must
have the same key, though. But, I would assume that the reason that the
keys are associated with the interface is so that you may have different
keys on different segments. I haven't checked this to be certain, though.

Well, border routers in area 1 who have authentication enabled will
communicate with other routers in area 0, assuming that area 0 has no
authentication enabled. Obviously, the area 1 only routers will only be
talking to other area 1 routers.
