I have also experienced this, and I don't really let it bother me. Certain
certifications such as the CCNP and CCNA, really only get you in the door
for an interview. The reason I got them was so that employers can be aware
that I at least have a base knowledge of the technology, otherwise by what
are they going to compare you to other candidates? I know people with
experience and no certifications that are excellent technically, I also know
people with experience that I wouldn't let put in a static route without
supervision. Same goes for certified people. But, in the event that all
things are equal, work experience and personality for instance, the
certification might be the thing that seperates you from the other candidate
and gets you the job. As for the CCIE, I am going for that because it is a
challenge and personal goal that I set for myself, I have heard for years
how tough it is and I want to be able to say that I passed it. The salary
is a big bonus also. Most certifications are not that tough, and there is
really no reason not to get them as far as I can see. I find that most
people (not all) who don't have them and give me grief about them are either
afraid of failure or are lazy. Just my opinion.

I'm almost sure that I'm not alone in this because I've seen so many time
all that we have in common in pursuit of our certification goals. In this
case just wondering how many of you out there have taken flack because you
are certified and because you are going for further certification. In none
of my posts I never list my certs, but for a couple of reasons. One is that
it is no different than any of those you all have. Two, who cares. Three,
it seems like it's just pride. But what I don't like that I have gotten
plenty from co-workers is jealousy, envy and putdowns because of my certs.
Just as on this list, I don't flaunt it, but it becomes known, and then
becomes your enemy. I got my certs and am going for others because it gives
me a way to focus on learning. Yes I have hopes for a better paycheck too
but I really don't like the way these things cause others to despise you.
Just curious and venting a little here.
