I might well be mistaken about his precise position with Cisco, but that was my
 impression.

As for free examples on CCO, I have a printed set of the 12.1 IOS docs (I like
reading from a book, where possible), and do not find many useful examples, cer
tainly not scenarios with diagrams and configs, in the command reference volum
es. The useful examples are in the configuration guide volumes, and there are
not enough of them when it comes to BGP. Parkhurst offers a little scenario fo
r each command (not every command, but most), and I really find that useful. T
he problem with the approach is that there is necessarily some redundancy. The
same sort of scenarios might be used for different command options, since the
book is intended to be used as a reference book and not as a textbook.

Yes, if if you look all over CCO, on TAC, and elsewhere, you can find lots of e
xcellent examples for free, but I still have not found anything like what Parkh
urst offers in this BGP book.

I don't think it fair to call it a cut-and-paste job, unless you can cite the p
ages of CCO that his diagrams and configs are cut and pasted from. If you can
cite those, you could save a lot of people some real money.

As someone else mentioned, different people learn well from different resources
. I personally find this BGP book approachable and interesting, and light to p
ick up (which makes a difference sometimes.)
