dslw lf 1500 vs. lf 1470 vs. ip tcp path-mtu-discovery

I've got into the habit of typing 'lf 1500' on my dlsw remote peer
statements.

Well, I started thinking about it, and 1500 seems too large.

>From memory, I seem to remember that the largest allow mtu for Ethernet
is 1516 bytes, and that the tcp header is around 16 bytes and the dlsw
tcp header is around 20 bytes. Please excuse me if my numbers are off
by one or two.

Still using rounded numbers, a mtu of 1500 doesn't seem small enough to
prevent fragmentation. 1470 seems like a better number.

Am I making a mistake of confusing frame size with mtu?

Is it a good rule of thumb just to put a local frame size command on
routers with token ring interfaces? Ethernet seems like it really
doesn't need them.

Also, how about just using 'ip tcp path-mtu-discovery' on token ring
routers and not specify an 'lf' size?

Thanks in Advance,

Michael
