Where does the RFC say that area 0.0.0.0 should be the only area in a
single-area system? As a member of the OSPF Working Group, that
sounds very surprising.

There are some experimental proposals (initiated, IIRC, by Pat
Murphy) for bypassing area 0.0.0.0 between adjacent nonzero areas,
but that's a quite different matter.
