Actually, to get it to work, I had to do it in the reverse order from what
you specified! When I did the interface portion firts, the authentication
failed. I took everything off, added the key-chain first, then told the
interface to use it, and presto. I think what may be happening is that if
you tell the interface to use a key-chain that doesn't exist, it sends an
empty key (or something). There's really not enough debug output to
determine this level of operation, but creating the key-chain first, then
doing the interface portion did the trick. Thanks!

Guess what you need to do is remove all the
authentication and key chain config and follow the
steps below to enter the config:

1. enable the authentication first under the
interface.
2. enter the key chain parameters.

It should woork after that.
It happens for EIGRP md5 authentication as well.

This was mentioned in one of the Cisco Tech Tips under
RIP.
