RE: OSPF over EIGRP !!!!

Hi Derek,

Here are some of my thoughts:

- Proprietary to Cisco, and has had a re-write of the code so there are
imcompatability not only with non Cisco routers, but also older versions of
IOS. OSPF is an IETF standard and would suite a multivendor network.
- Scalability can be an issue, as you cannot break up the EIGRP network into
Areas like OSPF. This might not be an issue if you have the CPU and Memory.
EIGRP now has stub feature, which could help. However, the scalability of
OSPF will also largely depend on the network designer's
understanding/experience of the protocol to fully maximise it.
- EIGRP uses 5s hello interval for T1 greater links, and 60s hello interval
for T1 lesser links or NBMA. While OSPF uses 10s hello and 30s hello for
NBMA. This might be worth considering for convergence times and traffic over
the link, although you can tweak the timers, but they are at the interface
level which may lead to misconfiguration if you have to configure alot of
routers.
- From what Cisco says, EIGRP uses less router resources than OSPF in terms
of CPU/Memory. Might be a consideration if you are running other things on
the router or you have a low end router.
- For secure EIGRP traffic over a link, EIGRP supports for automatic key
changes, while OSPF only allows for 1 message-digest key.
- EIGRP has also better load balancing tweaks compared to OSPF.
- And overall, an EIGRP network requires less protocol knowledge than OSPF.
OSPF requires knowing about Areas, LSAs, NBMA issues, DR/BDR. Where in
EIGRP, you can pretty much follow some CCO guides and get a EIGRP network up
and running in no time.
- EIGRP use to not support network masks like OSPF does, but the newer
releases seem to have solved this.

Regards,

Albert

Subject: OSPF over EIGRP !!!!

Hi All

Just wondering if anybody can help me here. I am looking for information
regarding using OSPF over EIGRP. Why would it be better to use OSPF over
EIGRP
or visa versa.

Cheers
Derek
