IPX Tunnel

Is IPX IPXWAN needed to create an IPX Tunnel?
I can create an end-to-end tunnel without an IPXwan and it works fine.
There was a post by Raj here the other day that used IPXWAN

R3:
interface tunnel 0
tunn sou (IP address)
tunn dest (IP address)
ipx ipxwan 0 unnmbered R3

Is there any problem with the tunnels that do not use IPXWAN?
