Steve,
Your configs look alright. I've tried the scenerio using a 2924 switch and
a 4500 router with a fast ethenet module. I couldn't reproduce the error,
everything worked fine, I was able to ping the HSRP IP and the BVI IP with
no problems from the swtich. I even configured a laptop with the same
subnet info and put it on vlan 20 on the switch and was able to ping the
switch, HSRP IP and the BVI fine from that laptop.
When you say that you removed the HSRP, the switch was able to reach the
trunking router, you mean the BVI?
When you say that everyone else remains unreachable, do you mean machines
with the same ip subnet info. hanging off the switch on vlans other than
vlan 40?
