question about Solie's book

In CCIE Practical Studies Volume 1. On page 299, it
said dial_string is used only for ISDN. But on page
301, for Async port, dial_string is configured and
it's different with the string in chat-script.

Which one is correct?

I think the string should be the one in chat-script.
But why dial_string is configured?
