Tom, I had this issue in the past, I was using a 1600 which also only has 8K
of NVRAM. In my case, I was using some RSA encryption keys to enable SSH. I
was using a 1024 bit modulus. These keys are saved in NVRAM right with the
config file. I had to change to a smaller modulus (512) to make it all fit.
You should be able to do a 'dir nvram:' to see how much space you are using.
The startup-config is your "configuration" and the private-config is where
other things like encryption keys are kept. Also note the Bytes total and
Bytes free.

In hindsight I wish I would have tried Brian's suggestion, I would have
liked to have used the 1024 bit key.

you may be able to compress the config file in the nvram, I am not sure on
the
800 series.it may be possible to store it in the flash also...
