it doesn't look like local authentication works which is why they state "use
atleast one of the following keywords"

Looking at the 3550 doco, it says

"aaa authentication {default} method1 method2

Enter atleast on of these keywords

group radius - Use the list of all Radius servers for authentication
none - use no authentication.

I'll keep looking but I don't see an example for local authentication...

Do you do a "show dot1x" what state is the port in?

Subject: CAT3550:dot1x command

Folks,
I was testing he command dot1x on my switch but I failed to test it as
my laptop gave me " windows was unable to find a certificate to log you
on to the network " after finishing this configurations:

aaa new-model
aaa authentication dot1x default local

interface FastEthernet0/18
 switchport access vlan 3
 switchport mode access
 no ip address
 dot1x port-control auto

I think the configuration is right and straight forward but how can I
send the username and password from the connected device?

thanx
