Yes, you can authentication the neighbors without having to authentication
the whole area by using the "ip ospf authentication [message-digest]"
command on the interface (notice it's on the interface and not under ospf,
that would mean area authentication)

neighbor based authentication instead of area based authentication?

R2 is hub while r1 and r3 are spokes, but all of them are in the same area.
Could I just authenticate the link between r1 and r2 using ip ospf
authentication?
