Hi Ozgur,
The other day you helped me out a great deal with your response to my
questions regarding configuring trunks and etherchannels on a 3550. Today,
I have a follow up issue I'd like to ask you about. I hope you don't mind.
With all the different negotiation protocols (DTP, PagP, UDLD) that operate
between 2 switches and the various default settings of ports, I'm confused
about which items should (or need) to be configured on the switches at
either end of the link(s). The only item that I know about for sure is
Native vlan - it must be set to the same value on both switches. But, I'm
not sure about any of the other things.
For example, if I specify which vlans are allowed to transit a trunk on one
switch, do I need to specify the same list of vlan's of the other switch?
Is there a way to think about this that's logical and easy to remember or
any guidelines or "rules of thumb" that can help me "Keep it simple, stupid"
(KISS) so I can approach these configurations tasks the right way?
Also, what are the things I should look for in the output of show commands
to verify all is as it should be?
Are there some quick and simple ckecks I should do that would clearly
indicate a silly configuration error?
Yesterday, I rented some rack time to get some hands-on with the 3550. As I
was going through a practice lab, I did a number of different show commands,
but wasn't sure about how to interpret the output and I didn't know what
specific items to key-in on in the output. I'm hoping that maybe you have
some good pointers you can highlight.
Thanks so much, I really appreciated your assistance, dt
