The latest Cat Code for the Sup requires 512MB for Sup720 (default) and
128MB for Sup 2 (default) and Sup 1 (NOT default)
Release 8.x DRAM Memory Requirements
The Catalyst 6500 series Supervisor Engine 720 ships with 512-MB DRAM, which
fully supports software release 8.x.
The Catalyst 6500 series Supervisor Engine 2 ships with 128-MB DRAM, which
fully supports software release 8.x.
The Catalyst 6500 series Supervisor Engine 1 ships with 64-MB DRAM which
does not support software release 8.x. To support software release 8.x, you
need 128-MB DRAM. The part number for the memory upgrade is MEM-S1-128MB=.
For detailed information on the memory upgrade, refer to the Catalyst 6500
Series Switch Supervisor Engine 1A DRAM Upgrade Installation Note at this

Subject: OT: 6500 question
All,
Sorry about the OT, but since I can't reach CCO, I figured I'd ask
you all. Is there any reason to upgrade the memory on a 6500 Supervisor (2
or 720)? I'm talking about the layer 2 portion, not the MSFC memory. Other
than the CAM table, MAC multicast info, and other small stuff, I can't see
what it'd be used for. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Chuck Church
