I believe you are right about the purpose of the nonegotiate option > it
has no meaning for an access port. I think the documentation is technically
correct, in that you can ENTER the command only if the port is currently in
access or trunking mode> It will not let you enter the command if the port
is in dynamic or tunnel mode.
However, if you are in access mode the only reason to enter the nonegotiate
command is if you intend to also enter the switchport trunk command.
Apparently, both the nonegotiate and trunk commands are needed to trunk
without sending DTP frames. So using the nonegotiate command on an access
port is just the first of two steps, the second step is to turn it into a
trunk. You can enter the nonegotiate command on an access port, but it has
no effect until you make the port a trunk.
Does that make sense?
