Zac,
Are you sure it's not a cabling problem? Once you get the "Open", you're connected to the serial port. If you get no output at that point, it may be because there's no input on the RXD line. What's connected to the other end of the serial port? Some early 2500s, and I think 4000s needed CTS or DSR (I don't rmember which one) asserted. If you cycle the power on r3 after you connect, do you see anything?
