I do not believe so unless there is some new technology I have not caught up
with yet.
Also consider that every broadcast, some types of nic card errors and etc.
would be propogated across the serial link.

If you want to extend vlans you can use packet over sonet and I blieve there
are other methods relying on dynamic packet transport over fiber and wdm. I
do not believe there is a way to do it over regular serial links but if
there is I would be very interested in hearing about them.
