have you tried the command:
Console> (enable) show spantree 1 active
This would show you the STP mode for VLAN 1, check this sample output:
VLAN 1
Spanning tree mode PVST+
Spanning tree type ieee
Spanning tree enabled
I checked version 8.3, which has the command:
set spantree mode
available, which version are you running ?
