Sam,

The root keyword makes that switch the root definately, the other changes the priority which could make it the root depending apon the other switches priority.

What is the difference between the below? Does both achieve the same, ie
switch wil be root for VLAN 10 ?

Switch(config)#spanning-tree vlan 10 priority 0

AND

Switch(config)#spanning-tree vlan 10 root primary
