Hello Tom,
By default the port will be set to dynamic desirable which will try to
autonegotiate the trunk. From the doccd " When you enter dynamic
desirable mode, the interface becomes a trunk interface if the
neighboring interface is set to trunk, desirable, or auto mode."
If you set to mode access it puts interface in non-trunking mode, so if
you are not going to be trunking than you can put to access mode. Again
from doccd:
"When you enter access mode, the interface changes to permanent
nontrunking mode and negotiates to convert the link into a nontrunk link
even if the neighboring interface does not agree to the change."
