Hi Joseph,
area x range command is given on the ABR and not on other internal routers. But in stub(or totally stubby) area, the command is given on the ABR and all other routers in the stub area also must be configured with stub statement:
example: assume R1 is ABR connected to area 0 and area 1. If you want to summerize 172.16.1.0/24 and 172.16.2.0/24 from area 0 to area 1, you need only this command on the R1
(config-router)R1#area 0 range 172.16.0.0 mask 255.255.0.0(not sure it is mask or netmaks, I have to refer)(0 in area command says to summerize from area 0)
Hope this helps
Mani

I'm sure that this has been discussed in the past sometime, but I cannot find a link to search the archives, and the Cisco documentaiton doesn't seem to make this clear either.
Waht I am wondering is if the area x range command needs to go on all the routers in the specified area, or only on the ABR. Cisco documentation seems to say that onyl on the ABR, but I have tried this, and it doesn't seem to do it. In the routing table outside this area, I see the summary route as I should, and all the more specific routes as well.
Please comment.
Joe
