You can see IDB information on most newer IOS's by doing:
r6#sh idb
Maximum number of IDBs 300
8 SW IDBs allocated (2608 bytes each)
6 HW IDBs allocated (4720 bytes each)
HWIDB#1   1   ATM0 (HW ATM)
HWIDB#2   2   Ethernet0 (Ether)
HWIDB#3   3   Loopback0
HWIDB#4   4   Serial0 (Frame relay, Serial)
HWIDB#5   5   Serial1 (Serial)
HWIDB#6   6   Serial2 (Serial)

As to the VRF limit its not simply just about the VRF's but also about 
the memory useage. Also some
platforms noteably the 3550 have a HW limitation rather than a resource 
one. Also the multi-ce
vrf lite limits can be different again.
