A Boson simulator will NOT be enough for CCIE Lab. You will need to do
a lot of practice in a lab (the lab can be remote). The question then
is just what kind of "real lab" or "real labs" you need.
To keep costs down, you can learn many of the CCIE lab foundations-level
lessons (involving Routing, FR, ISDN, PPP, QOS) using relatively cheap
2500 series routers. In fact, I know of a couple of intermediate-level
CCIE Lab workbooks that were designed for a small lab consisting mainly
of 2500s (wink wink). But you will eventually need to use rental racks
and advanced workbooks to put it all together with IS-IS and IPv6 and
ATM and two 3550s. If I remember correctly, it is hard or impossible to
find a 2500 IOS that will do IS-IS, IPv6 and all the other things you
need all at once, so 2500s are not quite as useful as they used to be.
My impression is that very few CCIE candidates spend a lot of time
learning the CCIE foundations-level lessons in a lab setting. You know,
the kind of lessons that Caslow and Pavlichenko emphasize in their
venerable book -- mainly attributes of Layer 2 and Layer 3 protocols,
and related pitfalls.
I think that most people buy an advanced lab workbook right after
passing the written exam, and try to slog their way through these
workbooks. They may learn some foundations-level lessons from the
advanced labs, but the more advanced lessons that the advanced labs
offer will often fly over their heads, until they come back and rework
the labs later (if they do them later). This method may work for some
people, but it can't be as efficient as concentrating on the
foundations-level material before moving on to advanced material. It
also tends to cause frustration, which can lead to candidates' giving up.
Best wishes,
