Tim, there are some confusing responses here so hopefully this will make it
clear.
The CCIE written does renew the expiration date of only ACTIVE Associate and
Professional level certifications. Passing the lab exam, while it should,
does not renew these dates. If your lower level certs have already expired
then passing the written will not help. You will once again have to
complete those certs in full in order to have them.

I hope you're right about this.
However, I've used the certification tracking tool to see where I stand and
it shows all my previous cert's as expired 3 weeks after I passed the lab
and got my number.
Is the tracking just slow in updating?

If you pass any of the CCIE-lab all your associate and professional
certification gets recertified with immediate effect .
