I did the same thing each time I traveled for the lab (and do this for
other things, too) - I'll book a month or two in advance on the hotel and
rental car company websites, and then about 2 days before I look on
Hotwire and see if I can get a better deal (because both of those
reservations can be canceled).
Last time I went to RTP I had a car booked for $40 and a hotel (La Quinta)
booked for $85. Two days before I booked the same car and same hotel on
Hotwire for $85, total, all taxes included. The trick is you can't book
very far in advance.
