Dennis,
I had a similar problem when connecting to a 3015 concentrator (I know
-- you're not using a concentrator).  I had to check a box on the
concentrator that allowed the 3002 to save the password.  Even then I
had to put in the password a few times before it would stick.  I don't
know if there's a similar feature in the router or not.  It was fairly
frustrating.
