STP isn't likely the problem here. As switches come up from startup -
they provide link but no connectivity - it hasn't read the config yet -
and is still POST'ing. Sometimes it's up and down a few times before
the config is read. He needs to find a converter that doesn't auto back
- or does so with a dealy (link stabilization delay).
