Brent,
Perhaps you mean to say that originator id is "desirable". I can assure you
it is not required in order to do Anycast RP. How do I know this? Not from
reading the docs, but by labbing it up.

Well, originator id is required with Anycast-RP. This
is because you do not want MSDP to set the source of a
multicast stream to the Anycast-RP address, but rather
the real RP address of the router.
This is explained in the Cisco docs.
