Well, I pinged the intermediate hop so the packet was not going through to
see if the delay shown by the traceroute was correct. I also remember having
read somewhere that you could not trust Traceroute for the delays but can't
remember the reason why

A lot of this is because Pinging THROUGH a device is not the same as
Pinging TO a box. Going through a box is likely going to be processed
in hardware (ie. faster .. and likely in an ASIC) where pinging TO a
device requires that device do a whole lot more than forward the packet.
It has to be punted where it is handled at the process level.
