John,
I don't know what helped me most, but I think it was attitude after all...
After a few months of nervous studies I realize that I need to change my
mindset. I really start to feel that lab preparations could be a fun after
all
(but not to my wife, I suppose ;))
The best advice I can give - do never hurry, you need to be careful on that
way..
There are no real shortcuts here, you just need to walk all the road..
Also, the next great thing, that really turns your preparation to a fun, is
communication with various people around mailing lists and forums.
While that may take some additional time, it surely pays off! :) It's just
so much joy to hang around with GroupStudy, when you really can
help someone! :)
There is a problem with long preparations - when you study for some long
time, you start to forget things you learned before :( This is a well-know
Ebbinghaus (I hope I write he's name correctly :) curve effect, so you need
to _plan_ your studies and _repetition_.
I found it very useful to reread a given lab next day I've done it, and redo
it
after a week or two since first try :) Also, make youself a habit to find a
couple
of things related to your lab on DocCD _every_ day :)
That's not that tricky, but I guess the main factor that helped me after all
was
a really long time preparation process. Yes, I know most of you guys
don't have the luxury of free time, so it's really important to plan your
studies
carefully...
Also, some communication skill to convince your family would be great!
HTH
Petr
