RE: Difference between default-network and default-gateway

To put it in a different way...

One could probably say that the 'ip default-gateway' is used for the
'device-originated traffic' only, so e.g. the RE- or supervisor-part only...

The question that arises then though is what will happen when the RE/Sup
does AND have both a 'ip default-gateway' as well as a default-route
configured in it's global routing-table (with different gateways, regardless
if via IGP, static-route or 'ip default-network' (a static as well in a way
on that box) ) AND does *NOT* have a more specific route to the destination
in it's table than the /0 ?? (regardless if connected, static or whatever)
Will it then use the 'ip default-gateway' or the global routing-table entry
?

In other words, is a route in the default routing-table given a higher
priority than the configured 'ip default-gateway' or vice-versa ?
One can think of interesting scenario's with that...E.g. when using a small
management-network via a management-interface or vlan...not just used for
only 'in-band OOB-access' but also ALL management-traffic... ;)

(To my knowledge, management-ethernet's like e.g. one on a GSR-GRP/PRP that
cannot be used in routing normally or at least won't run a dynamic
routing-protocol can still use the 'default-gateway')

Interested in hearing the answers to that... :)

Hi Aamir,

The main difference between them is the "ip default-gateway" command is used
in Layer 2 so imagine you have a 3550 that there is no routing working on it
"ip routing" so this command will create a gateway if needed for this
equipment, but in case you have Layer 3 working on it the "ip
default-gateway" has no effect at all so "ip default-network" needs to be
used in for example using RIP as your routing protocol you will see The
Gateway of Last Resort as 0.0.0.0 pointing to the route that you have
configure through the default network command.

Regards,

Andy
