There's a little confusion on this perhaps and Cisco's website could
state it a bit more clearly, though I thought I knew the answer. I
asked Cisco for clarification/confirmation when I was in exactly the
same position as you, so I can assure you that Scott's answer is
exactly correct.

From your first failed attempt, you have twelve months exactly to take
your next lab; if you take it again, then that clock resets and you
have twelve months again. The date of your written ceases to be the
date from which you set the countdown once your first lab attempt is
taken.
