That is why a box that can provide L7 visibility is important. From the
L7 information, the same box can provide QoS base on the classes
discovered. And then this box can do compression and intelligent
acceleration (not just acceleration). It's important to accelerate only
selected important or business critical traffic, not all traffic going
over the WAN...you wouldn't want to accelerate P2P or worm/viruses over
the WAN.
To some extend, you are right that the compression/accelerate tunnel
breaks the router ACLs, QoS etc. That is why you need to look for a box
that can take over the functions.
I don't work for any of these WAN optimization vendors. I have evaluated
most of the below mentioned boxes....just my 2 cents.

Some WAN acceleration vendors tunnel the optimized traffic while others
don't. After your acceleration point, if you want to be able to obtain
netflow, apply ACLs, QoS, etc, the tunneled nature pretty much breaks
these capabilities. Something to keep this in mind while doing your
evaluations.

You might want to demo Riverbed as well.
http://www.riverbed.com/docs/DataSheet-Riverbed-Steelhead_3.0.pdf
or go to their main site and look around for yourself. They do evals
and no, I do not work for them. The kinds of traffic they are best for
is not optimized for Oracle traffic, but you would be better off talking
to them. They are more optimal than some of the competitors in a lot of
ways.
