It's been a few years but I had an issue where an IOS bug was causing the
advertisements to not propagate through the transparent switch but an
upgrade took care of it. Probably not the case here but noteworthy either
way.

I have changed all switches to vtp version 2 but still no propagation
through the transparent switch. this seems in line with the explanation from
Oletu.
BTW I managed to have it working anyway by enabling 'l2protocol-tunnel vtp'
on the trunk port of the transparent switch :-) Thanks, Bit.
