You should actually try using a crossover cable and connect the PCs
back-to-back first to get a network "throughput" benchmark for the
application. If you feel that its an application issue (not network or OS
related) try using bandwidth testing software like Ipref to make sure.
Also you'll find that Iperf is a really good application to have in your
lab ;-)
