I used to write off space, but I worked from home. It has to be for the
employer's benefit, not yours. Also, it was one of my two bedrooms, so it
ended up legitimately adding up to about 2k/year (remember, southern
California rents/mortgages). For anything less than about 500-700, I wouldn't
bother because of the flag-raising.

hehehe... Yes, I know you get audited if they don't
add up. but statistically the things that flag an audit most (e.g. easiest
to fudge a little) are things like home office.
My electric is billed to my business, so it's an easy write
off. The percentage of the house "space" for the office isn't that big a
deal in the grand scheme of things. Again just my
opinion.

Scott,
You get audited
if your numbers do not add up .If you take deductions that are lawful like the
Home/Office space you have nothing to
fear.
I have
always done it without any IRS problems .....the deductions can be
significant.

Karl.

While technically possible, the idea of writing off home/office space is a
high risk for auditing. My accountant has always told me that for the
little value you get out of it, it's not worth the risk.
Just FYI.

You might ask the accountant about writing off part of your mortgage/rent as
this lab is taking up square footage in your home, and it's for work. It's
not that cut and dry, but you may get another break there.
