Hi Gary,
This sounds like a similar decision I had to make a few years ago with an
employer that I had had spent 28 years of my life with. They as many companies
were in the 'reduce overhead' mode and making many internal changes to the
structure of the company. I watched as many of my peers of many years being
let go for the sake of cost cutting and effeciency. What happened to me was a
bit different in that they brought in a local communications comapny to do
take of the network as a 'managed service' which was my primary repsonsibility
and the part of my job that I absolutely loved. This left me as a high paid PC
support guy for the executive staff and their families. I was well liked and
respected and could have continued doing that job but my concern was that if I
ever had to go get a another job I could be in trouble attempting to maintain
my income level and I was coming to work everyday mad at the world. So I had
to decide whether I wanted to accept what I couldn't control and live with it
or leave and try and do better for myself which obviously had risk. It was a
very difficult decision but I did leave and looking back now I am better for
it.

It looks like everyone's on the drinking team apart yourself.
You sound demotivated by the situation and by the sounds of things have
already leveled with your boss about your concerns to no avail. You seem
boxed into the technical role to clean up things across the piece at
everyone's beck and call and at the same time you can't influence matters.
So work on the things you can control. If you do move to another job try
and get on the drinking team at the new place because these situations are
prevalent in many organisations.
