Re: Difference bet. Summarisation and Aggregation

Is this a CCDE question or a CCIE question? There are two types of
aggregation to consider when designing a network - aggregation of
traffic and aggregation of routes. From Optimal Routing Design -

"Traffic aggregation takes advantage of the locality of traffic in two ways
- Aggregating local traffic at a point of exchange so that local
traffic does not cross wide-area links
- Providing a limited number of points through which traffic can leave
a specific region or area
Traffic aggregation points are effectively the edges of topological
zones within a network. Considered in the terms of systems and
subsystems, traffic aggregation points are the edges where subsystems
within the network interact."

When considering route aggregation and summarization, you will find
that they are used interchangeably. However, sometimes they can mean
different things. Again, from Optimal Routing Design -

"A network has two types of summarization
Aggregation of address space - This hides reachability, so multiple
networks are advertised through one routing update.
Summarization of topology information - This hides what the topology
looks like, advertising just which destinations are reachable, not how
to get there."

If this is not a CCDE question but a CCIE question, which is what this
list is designed for, then you'll find that there isn't much
difference between the terms and they both usually refer to hiding
reachability information.
