If you mean not going to a bootcamp, its certainly doable.
If you mean not drawing from great resources (vendor labs, mentors, etc...)
then you're in for a world of hurt. :-)
Of course a bootcamp with an instructor who makes their living prepping people
for the lab is a huge benefit. Not only through prepping for specific
technology, but also mindset, strategy and evaluation of your actual level vs.
what you perceive your level to be.
