There are a few options related to the show standby command ... these might
help some.

Apart from looking at the options and all ... I have always found the debugs
to be pretty good.  Have you tried these?
Version 1 is the default, so perhaps configure version 2 on another router,
and watch the debugs.   According to the docs, version 2 will be displayed
if it has been configured.
