So it looks valid on the surface. This may be a GNS3 thing? Have you
tried another simulation environment? (w/o the GUI?)
In response to layer 2 vs. layer 3: Do you NEED a trunk? Do you NEED
IP addresses? There are some subtle differences between the
approaches, their configuration, the options for traffic distribution,
etc...
