Protocol Access Entity modes can be:
- Authenticator
- Supplicant
- Both (Authenticator and Supplicant)

Supplicants are authenticated by the Authenticator, in this case the
port to which they are attached. That is why most configurations will
have 'dot1x pae authenticator' on the port, as the port is acting as
the Authenticator.
