Ethernet switch hardware loopback

Has anyone heard of using a hardware loopback cable to test an gig-e
mm-sfp interface? It seems all but impossible to me with loopback
detection via ethernet keepalives and udld but I suppose I could be off.
Has anyone ever done this successfully?
