Larry is right. I made it through the Jan 2001 layoffs and had my team cut
down significantly. Not only were we responsible for our own support tasks
with less staff we also had to take on other groups' tasks as they didn't
have the bandwidth to handle their load alone. Other groups that did
development, such as the team that was working on the NG-IOS ,aka modern day
IOS 15.x, was cut. As you can see, cutting some areas can lead to delay in
product lines and innovation -- hopefully they do not do that with this RIF.
Ultimately it is a mix of bottom performers, non-profitable units or units
that do not drive the core business (as you can see from the FLIP
discontinuance).

The Cuts have probably already been decided..It will happen in two
weeks..and its not always the bottom performers..If a Bus unit is failing, a
Lot of good engineers get cut regardless..Cisco will also analyze what
projects they want to keep and which they will throw out..the folks on the
ones that get thrown out will more than likely get cut also..Thats the way
it happened the last time around..
